Justin Trudeau’s Vancouver school-teaching days were three years over in 2005 when he and Sophie Gregoire extended their honeymoon at Anthony von Mandl’s Mission Hill Estate Winery.

BACK TO SCHOOLING:

With wildfire smoke still irritating their eyes and lungs, tens of thousands of British Columbians — from kindergarten to doctoral students — will soon begin filling their minds with new capabilities and the urge to discover more still. This column has identified many such learners and especially those who deliver or administer their learning. Several of the latter still do just that. Others have moved on to such opportunities as entrepreneurism, retirement or being our nation’s prime minister.  For them and others, the process of providing education soon revealed itself as a two-way street. That was exemplified by Emily Carr University of Art + Design’s 22-year president, Ron Burnett, who retired recently and was succeeded by Gillian Siddall. In 2010, two years after the institute he led became a full-fledged university, Burnett said: “I have learned more at Emily Carr than I thought possible 14 years ago.”
